In a clash that showcased the resilience of the Northside Wizards and the promising talent of the Logan Thunder Women, the Wizards emerged victorious with a commanding 91-66 win at the Thunder’s home court on Saturday night.
Right from the tip-off, the Wizards demonstrated their offensive prowess, capitalizing on both inside drives and shots beyond the arc. Their dominance on the boards, particularly in securing offensive rebounds, provided them with crucial second-chance opportunities.
The Thunder found themselves trailing early as the Wizards surged to a 13-0 lead, until Jade Kirisome ignited a spark with a tightly contested 3-pointer.
Despite Kirisome’s efforts, the first quarter ended heavily in favor of the Wizards at 32-13.
The second quarter saw a standout performance from the Thunder’s young star, 16-year-old Prayus Natoa. Natoa’s presence under the basket was formidable, as she pulled down numerous offensive rebounds, executed effective screens for her teammates, and displayed proficiency in the pick-and-roll game alongside veteran Mikhaela Cann.
Heading into halftime with a score of 50-35 in favor of the Wizards, the Thunder regrouped and came out with renewed energy in the second half. A 7-0 run at the start showcased their improved defense and rebounding efforts.
Yet, the Wizards’ AJ Johnson quickly took control with a personal scoring spree, extending the lead once again.
Despite a valiant effort from the Thunder, the Wizards maintained control.
As the game entered its final quarter, the Wizards continued to display their class, extending their lead over the Thunder. Although Kirisome showcased her scoring consistency, it was not enough to overcome the Wizards’ dominance.
Standout performances from the Thunder included Natoa’s impressive stat line of 9 points, 17 rebounds with an astounding 8 offensive rebounds, and 5 assists, along with Kirisome’s 22 points and 5 rebounds on efficient shooting.
The Thunder’s 15% shooting from beyond the arc and the Wizards’ 35% three-point shooting, coupled with the Wizards’ 12-rebound advantage, ultimately proved decisive in this matchup
The Wizards’ dominance in the first and fourth quarters secured their comprehensive victory, while the Thunder’s youthful talent and resilience provided glimpses of their potential for the future.
