‍2021 Perpetual Award Winners:

Special congratulations to the following #ThunderFamily members for their significant contribution to Logan Basketball in 2021:

John Taia Coach of the year Award – Kevin McGrath – In his first season as a LoganThunder representative head coach, Kevin McGrath lead his U12 Logan Thunder boys to an SQJBC gold medal. Kev then lead our boys to win the U12 State Championship on our home floor. Finishing second in their pool at state champs prior to the crossover round, the tournament was postponed due to a COVID lockdown. Kev kept the group prepared and ready continuing to train in the week break following lockdown. The team returned ready to compete on the final day of the tournament, securing a dominate semi final win against Southern Districts and then a great win against Gold Coast to win the state championship. The first Logan Thunder State Championship won on our home court. All of Kev’s 6am additional practice sessions, scouting, glory league footage preparation, planning, time, effort and investment paid off. A big congratulations to our 2021 John Taia Coach of the year – Kevin McGrath.

Mikhaela Donnelly Junior Female player of the year Award – Mackenzie Auton – Returning from an ACL injury, Mackenzie lead her U18 Logan Thunder girls to a 3rd place Bronze Medal at the U18 State Championships. Mackenzie was selected in the U18 Queensland South State team and went on to play a significant role in the team as a bottom age player at the National Championships. Mackenzie was also selected in the National Performance Program and trained regularly throughout the year with some of Queensland’s brightest future stars. Mackenzie then made her debut in the 2021 NBL1 North Season with our Bendigo Bank Logan Thunder women in Round 1 against Red City. As well as being one of our brightest future stars, Mackenzie gives back to our next crop of Logan Basketball Juniors by regulating coaching at McDonald’s Thunderball sessions on a Saturday morning. Congratulations Mackenzie, our 2021 Mikhaela Donnelly Junior Female Player of the Year.

Mitchell Young Male Junior Player of the year Award – Javarne Hunt – In his top age season with our Logan Thunder U18 boys, Javarne continued to lead his team by example all season. Javarne was selected in the U18 Queensland South State Team and played a big role at the National Junior Championships. Javarne has followed on from Nationals playing regular minutes with our Logan Thunder Queensland State League team. Javarne also suited up for his first NBL1 North McDonald’s Logan Thunder men’s team. Congratulations Javarne, our 2021 Mitchell Young Junior Male Player of the Year.

Len Hamilton Volunteer of the year Award – Brendan McAuliffe – Brendan continues to be a Logan Basketball Club man volunteering his time across many programs and age groups in 2021. Brendan continues to volunteer as the Logan Thunder SQJBC delegate and Logan Thunder team manager coordinator. Brendan also played a big role in the re-structuring of the Jazz Basketball Club in 2021 assisting Logan Basketball with admin and services to re-establish Jazz (a Logan basketball founding club) as a club for the future. Congratulations Brendan McAuliffe, our 2021 Logan Basketball Len Hamilton Volunteer of the year for the 2nd consecutive year.

Nicole Cooper Spirit Award – U12 Logan Thunder Gold boys – Our U12 Logan Thunder Gold boys were made up of a majority bottom age and some bottom-bottom age players and showed incredible Thunder spirit to finish in the top 2 of Division 2 at the end of the SQJBC regular season. The opportunity arose for the team to move up in to Division 1 for State Championships and after some discussion and goal setting, the team includingcoaches and parents agreed to move up to division 1 and play against the best in Queensland. The boys played every game at the state championships with a sense of pride and toughness with our Logan Thunder program values on full display. The team put results behind them and focused on each game playing together and celebrating each others success and represented our Thunder Family proud. Congratulations U12 Logan Thunder Gold boys, our 2021 Nicole Cooper Spirit Award recipients.

A special mention also to our Junior Female referee of the year – Summer Thompson and Junior Male referee of the year – Jayden Meranda on your success as Logan Basketball referees.

Our U14 Logan Thunder and Logan Thunder Gold boys still have their state championship to play in September. Regardless of the result’s, a very successful year for our Logan Thunder program and all Thunder Family members from players, coaches, managers, parents, referees, officials and staff should be very proud.
